Retrieving articles on "prognosis"
from MEDLINE
Here, we tackle the retrieval of article citations
on prognosis of a disease. Let us take leukemia as an example.
The best
MeSH terms to use in this instance are: leukemia, prognosis, survival rate. The
boolean combination you'd use is leukemia AND (prognosis OR survival rate).
The
term "prognosis" covers articles where the likely outcome of the progress of the
disease is discussed. The term "survival rate" retrieves articles where there
are studies, and statistical numbers relating to survivors.
Modality
of search
1. Click on Preview/Index, select MeSH terms from the dropdown,
type in leukemia in the search box, and then click on Index. From the results,
you'd choose leukemia, and click on AND. There are 120324 citations.
2. Repeat
the procedure with the term.
3. Next repeat with "survival rate", but this
time click on OR instead of AND.
4. Then go to the search box on top.
Search
Pubmed for:
You
would find the following: "leukemia"[MeSH Term] AND "prognosis"[MeSH Terms] OR
"survival rate"[MeSH Terms]
5. Modify the search statement by putting
in parantheses the terms prognosis OR survival rate. It should look like this:
"leukemia"[MeSH
Term] AND ("prognosis"[MeSH Terms] OR "survival rate"[MeSH Terms])
6.
Click on "Go". You retrieve 8345 articles.
7. If you'd like to narrow this
further, change MeSH Term to MeSH Major Topic for leukemia.
Your final
search strategy would be "leukemia"[MeSH Major Topic] AND ("prognosis"[MeSH Terms]
OR "survival rate"[MeSH Terms])
Click on "Go" You retrieve 340 articles.
